Technical Website Design Considerations
Before beginning any website design, there are several technical aspects of website development that should be considered together.
Foremost are the web hosting requirements, maintenance requirements, online ordering requirements and search engine optimisation requirements.
It can be very costly, difficult and time consuming to move from one web host to another, so it is best to get this right at the start.
Many websites are built as a one off activity with little consideration for changes or maintenance. Often this means the website needs to be completely rebuilt, making obsolete much of the initial investment.
Most websites require periodic major revisions to reflect changes in the business and some require very frequent updating, which definitely should be planned for at the start. Who will do the updating? From which computer? Over what Internet connection? What software needs to be purchased? What training will be required?
Typically service companies do not require any online ordering, but product or distribution companies may. There are many possibilities for effecting online ordering on a website and the method used in terms of maintainability and cost should be carefully considered for each business.
Search Engine Optimisation, which typically entails many changes to the website itself, can be unnecessarily costly and ineffective, if it is not planned for at the start and designed into the website itself.
